we took the wood frame canvas kayak
over an unforseen low head dam
somewhat cross ways

no other way to take it
no other way to fake it

it was either that or break it
snap the wooden spine
dropping straightaway down
and drown

and all the way 
to the next town

i was cussed out
for doing what I did

she and i both burned
floating in the afternoon sun

she still yells at me
for that subtle move
and sometimes when i've had enough
i tell her

i like 
that you still have 
the breath
to yell at me
